Trans Pennine Trail Event
The Trans Pennine Trail is a long distance multi-user route linking the coastal towns of Southport in the west with Hornsea in the east. There are also route options linking Leeds, York and Chesterfield. On its route across the north of England the trail follows canal towpaths, disused railway lines, riverbanks, roads and paths, taking in the countryside and urban landscapes. Some 25 miles of the trail passes through Doncaster from it's northern boundary at Sykehouse to its western boundary at Bolton upon Dearne.
2010 marks the 21st Anniversary of the Trans Pennine Trail's inaugural ride which publicly launched the route.
To celebrate this milestone the 26 Local Authorities across the trail are organising, in conjunction with the Trans Pennine Trail central office, a baton relay. Five batons will set off from the end points of the trail, heading towards the mid point in Barnsley, where a celebration festival will take place on Sunday 20th June at Barnsley Football Ground.
The batons are due to pass through Doncaster on the afternoon of the 17th of June, where they will be received at the boundary at Topham, (Sykehouse) and then proceed along the trail to Bentley Pavilion. On the morning of the 18th of June they will set off on their journey along the trail from Bentley Pavilion towards our boundary with Rotherham, at Bolton on Dearne.
Here's where you come in - the aim is to have lots of community involvement (different user groups, schools, youth groups, Scots, Guides, Supermarkets, Mother and toddler groups, Emergency Services, Armed Forces, Friends, Volunteer Rangers... the limit is endless) to help carry the baton. We are also organising our own celebratory event at Bentley pavilion on the afternoon of the 17th.
If you are interested in helping us out and taking part in the relay or would like further information about the trail, then please get in touch wit Andy Carnall - 01302 734586
