Do your bit for Sport Relief 2010

Doncaster Council is supporting Sport Relief next month with a number of events to raise money to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world's poorest countries.

On Thursday 18 March, Doncaster Council and Sainsbury's are working in partnership to arrange a 5 a-side football tournament from 6-9pm at The Dome.   Members of the public are being encouraged to get together with work colleagues and enter teams.  Each participant who takes part in the event will pay a £7 entry fee, with all the proceeds being donated to Sport Relief 2010.  More information is available by calling 01302 735403.

On Saturday 20 March, a 24-hour Jogathon is taking place at the councils Adwick Leisure Centre.  It runs from 2pm on Saturday to 2pm on the Sunday 21.  Volunteers are being asked to book time to run a mile on the treadmill and aim to raise £1 per mile.  For more information or to book a slot call Andy Pidduck on 01302 721447.

On Sunday 21 March, the council, along with Keepmoat Stadium and Doncaster Active Partnership are organising the Sport Relief Mile at Keepmoat Stadium. The route will take runners around the stadium and grounds, finishing with a lap of the athletics track.  People of all ages and abilities are invited to take join in and with three distances to choose from they can pick the challenge that best suits them. As well as raising money for a great cause there will also be the chance to enjoy a pre-mile warm up, bungee fun run, sumo suits and a chance to meet Doncaster Rovers mascot Donny Dog.  It is hoped that over 1000 people will take part.

In 2008, 524 people took part in Sport Relief in Doncaster and helped raise £19.6 million nationally for charity. Further information about the run will be made available on the Sport Relief website from mid-January at www.sportrelief.com/themile

For more information about these exciting events contact Doncaster Council on 01302 737858.

Bikeability in Doncaster

The Doncaster School Sport Partnerships have contracted cycle training providers, Cycling Experience, who will be offering free cycle training to the Boroughs Primary and Secondary schools. This is in addition to the training also offered to some schools through Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s Road Safety Team – if you have already received training this academic year and have other pupils that would like to take part you may be able to have another course.

All pupils will be instructed on how to ride their bikes to the Governments new National Standard for Cycle Training, which has been designed to give the next generation of cyclists the skills and confidence required to ride their bikes on today’s roads. All pupils will receive quality cycle training by fully qualified and accredited instructors in accordance with Bikeability which has replaced the old Cycling Proficiency test.

All schools will be receiving a letter regarding the delivery of the training.
