MFL & Literacy Leaders 'Up & Running'

Literacy Building Blocks

For the past 15 years Sports Leaders UK have been championing leadership courses for young people from the age of 14. These courses have had their focus in sport and more latterly dance. However, we have always maintained that it is not the sport or dance that are the most important part of the course. In actual fact, sport and/or dance have simply been the means used to teach people how to lead others. For many years teachers of subjects outside of sport and dance have been keen to emulate the success they have witnessed in using leadership in the PE and Dance Departments in their own specialisms and the Foreign Language Leader & Literacy Leaders Award is Sports Leaders UK's first attempt to give teachers the support they need to do just that.

At Rossington All Saints School Young Persons Development Officer Craig Collins has this term being delivering both the MFL leaders and Literacy Leaders. He had this to say about the programme ‘This is an excellent opportunity to encompass the leadership skills to other areas of the curriculum, and target those young people that wouldn’t normally be involved in leadership.’

The Foreign Language Leader & Literacy Leaders Award is not concerned with using sport to teach languages (scoring a game in French or teaching a skill in Spanish for example). Instead the award aims to teach young people how to lead others through basic languages activities (teaching the colours or days of the week for example) by working to develop their communication, organisation and motivational skills.

We are also confident that by learning how to lead others, the young people will develop a greater understanding of the subject area, which in turn will lead to an increase in their personal attainment.
