Playground Leaders at Askern Spa Juniors

Askern Spa Junior school have taken their Playground Leaders scheme further by looking at celebrating the success of their leaders and promoting this in a positive way in their school.

In October 2009, 20 students attended training at their school to deliver different games and physical activities at lunchtime. Following this training the students were then placed into "trio teams" to deliver games during lunch times.

The plan of action for each lunch time is that one student sets up the equipment, one student completes the register and one student gives instructions on what the activity is and how to play the activity safely and correctly.

Each month the PLT Derryn Whitely and Askern Spa’s Sporting Volunteer Arthur McAdam pick a playground leader of the month and they get a certificate and their picture on the sports board, which was set up back in 2009.

Every week then the PLT takes home the registers which contain information about which
students have participated each day. This data is then analysed and each term the students in each class who have participated the most win a prize and a certificate.

The playground leaders also star any children who have been exceptional for example they have played fairly or helped then set up equipment. These students then go into a star players prize draw a bit like a raffle.

All of these rewards have been hugely success in raising aspirations and achievements within the school and improving behaviour on the playground at lunch time.

This scheme is working really well and we are getting a lot of students participating every day. Well done Askern Spa!
