Rossington Rugby Gets Up and Running
Rossington All Saints has begun the year with a huge push on Rugby Union. With a school that is predominantly made up of keen footballers the school has targeted getting their pupils into the more physical demanding sport and it has been a big success. After a slow start with only a dozen or so lads turning up to training, interest has grown and now more than 30 students are taking part in training and competitive friendlies against other schools.
The push has also been aided by the help of South Yorkshire Rugby Union and their development officer Jonathan Rickerby. Jonathan has been coming into school on a regular basis to help with curriculum lessons and will be in after half term to deliver an after school club on a Tues 3.00pm – 4.15pm. It’s been a very kick and clap introduction of Rugby Union to the Rossington pupils but interest is growing by the day and I’m sure this year will be the start of things to come.
The first fixture took place last week where a mixed Y7/8 team took on Armthorpe School and even though they lost out in the end put up a great fight and scored three tries in the process, two of which coming from Y7 students Robert Day, who had a fantastic game. Captain Luke Emery also played extremely well, but in all honesty it was difficult to pick out man of the match due to an outstanding effort from the entire team.
Future competitions are already in place as the Y7’s will be playing on the 4th of November and the Y8/9’s have a event on the 25th November. Finally I would like to thank Jonatahn Rickerby from South Yorkshire Rugby and all students who have taken part over the last half term.
