9.1.10 Level 2 Cricket coaching Course

Cricket comes to Thorne in snowy January – Howzat!

On a day of ice, frost and snow in deepest January that practically shut down the rest of the UK, Trinity Academy in Thorne was welcoming 24 candidates onto a coaching course of one of our summer delights – cricket.

Candidates battled through dreadful conditions to attend the Level 2 course from the likes of Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds, Barnsley and Fishlake – not to mention Thorne and Moorends.

Course tutors Dale Kerruish and Richard Wilkinson were delighted with the 100 per cent turnout, which has been maintained over the full four weeks of the recently completed course.

Kate Gardner, School Sports Co-ordinator for Thorne and Moorends schools, commented: “We were thrilled with the excellent attendance and attitude of all candidates. Great thanks must also go to TrinityAcademy who stepped in at the eleventh hour to act as host venue following the sad destruction by fire of the intended venue at CampsmountTechnologyCollege.”

TrinityAcademy pupils Liam Coetzee (Thorne Colliery CC) and Josh Derby (Fishlake CC) received funding for the course from Liz Appleyard at the Thorne-based Extended Services, whilst Sam Mason’s fees were paid for by his club, Fishlake CC.

Kate Gardner added: “These pupils are already actively involved in coaching at their clubs and intend ‘paying back’ their respective sponsors for this higher level course by also coaching in their local primary schools this summer. They have been a credit to TrinityAcademy. The final assessment will take place in early March.”

The Extended Services cricket funding has played a crucial role in developing the sport within our local schools. It has paid for a Level 1 coaching course which saw nine Trinity pupils qualify, all of whom will be helping Liam, Josh and Sam later this year. It has also funded a teachers’ cricket coaching course and essential transport to selected events in 2009, whilst Fishlake CC is once again planning to host a Year 3/4 tournament later this year after last year’s successful event.

Kate Gardner, Alison Slack of Fishlake CC and Liz Appleyard of Extended Services added that they were united in their hope that the increasingly strong school-to-club links generated by the Extended Services funding will further develop the place of cricket within the primary school PE curriculum.
