Bikeability in Doncaster

Cycle Experience Logo

The Doncaster School Sport Partnerships have contracted cycle training providers, Cycling Experience, who will be offering free cycle training to the Boroughs Primary and Secondary schools. This is in addition to the training also offered to some schools through Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s Road Safety Team – if you have already received training this academic year and have other pupils that would like to take part you may be able to have another course.

All pupils will be instructed on how to ride their bikes to the Governments new National Standard for Cycle Training, which has been designed to give the next generation of cyclists the skills and confidence required to ride their bikes on today’s roads. All pupils will receive quality cycle training by fully qualified and accredited instructors in accordance with Bikeability which has replaced the old Cycling Proficiency test.

National Standards

The National Standards aim to promote a nationally agreed uniform syllabus and guidelines for all cycle training in the UK. These training standards have been developed in consultation with over 20 of the UK’s leading bodies and organisations involved in providing road safety and cycling education including CTC, ROSPA, LARSOA, Cycle Training UK.

The National Standards have three levels:

Level 1(Primary Pupils) is usually carried out in a traffic free environment. By completing Level 1, pupils will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic free environment and as a pre-requisite to a road trip

Level 2 (Primary pupils) is carried out on quiet roads but in real traffic conditions. By completing Level 2 pupils will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on quiet roads (Level 1& 2 are carried out consecutively).

Level 3 (Secondary pupils) is undertaken on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions and advanced road features. By completing Level 3 you will be able demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features
