Doncaster Young Ambassador to visit the home of the Olympics

Student from McAuley School, Becki Quigley has won a trip of a lifetime to Olympia, Greece, as part of the Youth Sport Trust Young Ambassador Programme.

Becki was nominated at the start of this year to be one of Doncaster's Senior Young Ambassadors taking on the role of spreading the message of the Olympics and its ideals, and the power of sport amongst young people.

She has has coordinated the McAuley School Leadership Academy over the past 12 months and been instrumental in organising a variety of events including the forthcoming 2012 Celebration Event at the Keepmoat Stadium on 2nd July where over 500 young people from across Doncaster will come together to take part in a day of sport.

After applying for the chance to win the trip to Olympia Becki was then invited to a Selection Day in London at which she had to do a 5minute presentation to a national panel of eminent sports professionals including Baroness Sue Campbell, Chair of Youth Sport Trust. This was all after sitting one of her A-Level exams early at 7am to ensure she could be in London in time for her presentation.

The following day Becki received the news that she is one of only 8 young ambassadors to have won a place to Olympia.

There is a very exciting opportunity for eight experienced Young Ambassadors to be selected to visit Olympia, the home of the Olympic Games in Greece and the International Olympic Academy on a four-day intensive learning experience centred on Olympism and the “power of the Games”. The date of the visit is 14-18 July 2009. .

The group of eight Young Ambassadors will be accompanied on the visit by a member of staff from the British Olympic Foundation and the Youth Sport Trust.

Outline of the visit:

·         Visit Athens and tour around the ancient 1896 Olympic Games stadium, the Parthanon, the Temple of Zeus and the venue of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games

·         Olympia tour of the ancient site accompanied by the British Olympic Foundation giving you some unique insights

·         VIP access to a conference taking place at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia

During the visit the eight Young Ambassadors will be blogging about what their experience is like and also developing resources to be shared with other Young Ambassadors back in the UK.

On return to the UK each Young Ambassador will give three days of their time to attend events (for example the Young Ambassador Conferences) to share their experience and learning with other Young People.

Congratulations to Becki, a much deserved winner!
