More than 20 of Doncaster’s Young Coaches will be organising and lead activities at the Playgorund to Podium Ability Day on Friday 21st January, 10am-12noon for over 50 local young people starting out on their sporting journey that takes young disabled people from PE, through participation, to high level performance and competition.

Danum Lower School played host on 21st January 2011 for young people with disabilities from across Doncaster to get an opportunity to take part in Athletics and Boccia, two Paralympic sports. Those that show a talent in the sports will then get the chance to develop through regional training squads and be signposted to local clubs. This event was supported by Doncaster Athletics Club which provide coaching sessions for young people with disabilities.

The event was planned and the coaching delivered by Young Leaders aged 14-18 from the School Sport Partnerships Leadership Academies, Danum School HSLA students and Young Ambassadors who act as role models to promote the value of sport and the Olympic and Paralympic ideals.

From August 2011 funding for the national network of School Sport Partnerships is being cut by Government resulting in events such as the Playground to Podium Ability Days and over 170 competitions per year for 21,000 pupils aged 5-19 from across Doncaster having to be cancelled as the staffing structure and finance to support schools will disappear.

Rosie Winterton MP attended to present Doncaster School Sport Partnerships with a Youth Sport Trust Regional Award won for “Innovation in Developing a Diverse Group of Young People as Leaders and Volunteers in Sport” along with meeting the Partnerships Young Ambassadors to discuss the impact that Physical Education and School Sport has had on their lives and those of other young people across Doncaster.
