Young Ambassador’s 2012 Day Inspires Doncaster Pupils!
For the second year running Doncaster’s Gold Young Ambassadors organised an outstanding 2012 Day at the Keepmoat Stadium for Year 5/6 pupils!
Building on the success from last year’s event the Gold Young Ambassadors began planning for this year’s event, which was held on Thursday July 1st at the Keepmoat Stadium back in November 2009! Securing funding for the event was essential so they set about applying to the Youth Bank Fund, and in early 2010 the Young Ambassador’s were successful in securing £2,476 in order to run the event!
Once funding was secured they were able to book the venue and began to organise the timetable for the day. They decided that in order to involve Silver Young Ambassadors and Leadership Academies they would invite them to deliver the sports/activities with support from SSCo’s and partnership staff. This would also re-enforce that it was day run by young people for other young people in Doncaster!
On the day, over 450 year 5/6 pupils from across 15 primary schools arrived at the Keepmoat Stadium full of excitement and energy for a day packed full of activities! In keeping with the Olympics and Paralympics all the participants took part in an opening ceremony, which involved a procession around the athletics track led by the Partnership mascots ‘Get Active Gary’ and ‘Fabio the Flying High Fox’ and recited the Olympic oath!
Prior to the event, each school was allocated a country to represent and given t-shirts and banners to decorate! This gave each school an identity on the day and looked at developing young people knowledge of all the different countries that take part in the Olympics!
Throughout the day pupils had the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of sports, all coached by Leadership Academy students! Activities included rock-it-ball, ultimate frisbee, taekwondo, athletics, dance, rounder’s and cricket! Feedback from the pupils has been extremely positive, with many saying that ‘they have had the opportunity to take part in new activities that they not tried before’.
After an exhausting day of activity all participants were awarded for their efforts during the closing ceremony where the School Sport Partnerships’ mascots gave each pupil a certificate of achievement!
The Gold Young Ambassadors also gave a short speech to thank schools for attending and to ensure that they spirit of the Olympic and Paralympics games were fresh in the pupils’ minds as they left the event!
So... as we look forward to summer 2011 the new intake of Gold Young Ambassadors will begin to look at how we can build on the success of this year, to make Doncaster’s 2012 Celebration Day an even bigger triumph!
